UNIVERSITY

Victoria University Wellington, Gateway

This landmark building in Wellington is the new science teaching and research building at Victoria University’s Kelburn Campus. The intricate and complex building was designed to optimise the unusually shaped site footprint.

Wight Aluminium provided the total façade solution including both the glazed curtain wall, seismic joints and aluminium cladding. The curtain wall used the APL 175mm structural glaze suite with vertical and horizontal fins serving both aesthetic and sun shading purposes. A number of new dies were developed for this project and project specific testing was conducted at APL’s test facility in Hamilton.

Opening sashes were integrated within the curtain wall pods adjacent to the feature glass wings that fly seamlessly beyond the corner mullions. A large structurally glazed rooflight covers the four separate greenhouses at the top of the buildings, which are ventilated by automated glass louvers integrated into the unitised curtain wall system.
